#17 “U +
Pink never holds back with anything she does. She tells it like it is
and like her or hate her you have to respect her. Lyrically this has got to be
one of the best tell your man off records I’ve heard since Millie Jackson’s
tirade on her cover of the Kenny Loggins classic
“This Is It.” They perfectly matched the music to fit the lyrics with an uptempo aggressive dance track that accentuates her
attitude. There are a number of strong dance records on the radio right now and
ya gotta feel good when you
can turn on Top 40 CHR Radio and hear this single “Wait A Minute” by The
Pussycat Dolls and “Sexy Back” by Justin Timberlake back to back. Many a Top 40
station are all over these singles yet in what has to be the biggest sign of
how out to lunch radio programmers have become, they play these records and
tell their Hot Mixers Dance is Dead! At least that is the case one Hot Mixer
told me. When I stopped laughing at that story, I had to get serious for a
minute. On the upside God Bless the powers that be at radio for being equal
opportunity employers and giving the clearly retarded a job. However, in giving
the mentally challenged jobs programming radio stations they only hurt
themselves. When a radio programmer who has dance records in power rotation
doesn’t even recognize what he is playing then it is of no wonder why terrestrial
radio keeps bleeding away listeners. Anywho, for the
rest of us that can tell the difference between a record clearly made for the
dance floor and one that isn’t, we can celebrate such strong dance product like
this Pink single. Lately a number of artists of sizeable stature and popularity
seem to be expanding the dance genre with new sounds and rhythms that are
shaking up our often stale dance floors. They know what they are doing for Pink
in particular is well aware of what’s goin’ on in
dance as when she comes to New York you can find her on the dance floor at
Splash. We can ignore their contributions or embrace them as a breath of fresh
air. I say embrace them. A good shake up every now and then is needed to keep
us all on or toes.
#19 “You’ll Always Have Me” by Danielle
Bollinger (EsNtion Silver) 129 BPM
Danielle Bollinger has been cranking out some pretty good records for
a minute now although I gotta say this is her best so
far. Unlike so many of the artists whose overindulgence on the vocals can make
you seasick Ms. Bollinger never has to go there as she lets the melody of the
song and lyrics take you on the journey rather than resorting to desperate
vocal histrionics. When you have great material like this you can afford to let
the material lead the way. This is a strong pop song with smart production, although
it is a bit on the tribal side it is still commercial and radio friendly.
Danielle’s releases have all been smart in that way and with each release they
just keep getting better.
#36 “I Ran” by A Flock Of Seagulls
(Jive) 141 BPM
Some tunes and some acts perfectly seem to capture time in a bottle.
For anyone old enough to have been there A Flock Of Seagulls and “I Ran” in
particular perfectly capture the early 80’s New Wave scene perfectly. Back in
the day when A Flock Of Seagulls ruled the roost what made them so popular was
the fact that this tune was a perfect bridge between the “Progressive Disco”
singles coming outta Montreal on Unidisc
Records and San Francisco from Megatone and Moby Dick
and the more aggressive more uptempo New Wave singles
from acts such as Devo & Billy Idol. Jox would regularly spin a set that would go like this…
“Lay All Your Love On Me” by Abba
“The Hills Of
“I Wanna
Take You Home” by Patrick Cowley
“White Wedding” by Billy Idol
“I Ran” by A Flock Of Seagulls
“Antmusic” by Adam & The Ants
That clean ending on “I Ran” would let you go anywhere and most jox often did. I have to assume this is on the chart based
on some remix but no remix will have the impact that the original had and I
celebrate that ground breaking original recording today.
#48 “Let’s Dance” by David Bowie
(EMI-America) 113 BPM
While celebrating 80’s influential pop releases we might as well go
over this single for it too is represented on this chart with a Richard Humpty Vission mix. David Bowie is the richest musician in the
world, but he hadn’t a penny to his name before he released this single, his
first for EMI-America. Although his RCA releases are considered more defining
and historic (“Ziggy Stardust,” “Diamond Dogs,”
“Young Americans,” etc.), his deal with RCA and Mainman
were such that he was in the red when he left RCA to sign with EMI-America.
This single was so big not just here in America but around the world that it
enabled him to buy back his entire catalog and that move set him up to be
wealthier than Paul McCartney, Mick Jagger and
Michael Jackson. You would think that there is no one in the world who through the original or any of the various remixes and
in particular this new one, wouldn’t know this song wouldn’t you? Filed under the
radio equal opportunity employment rule a radio programmer told a hot mixer
about this single in his mix show, that “it wasn’t
popular enough” and “our audience doesn’t know it yet.” Forget the fact that
the Richard Humpty Vission mix had already been added
into rotation! How are we ever gonna succeed or get a
successful dance station on the air when this is the mentality of the people
running the show I will never know, but anywho no
matter how popular or big something is I guess there will always be one person
clueless to it’s existence. Either way if you have this remix or any of the
others, or even the original you can’t go wrong with this tune originally
released back in 1983!
#51 “Runaway” by Jamiroquai
(Epic) 129 BPM
Without hesitation I can tell you that Jamiroquai
is one of my favorite acts of all time. Jay’s vocals not unlike Stevie Wonder’s seem effortless while packing a whole lotta soul. From their first release “Emergency On Planet
Earth” right through “Runaway” each single release in it’s original LP version
is a mini masterpiece. The remixes of each of their singles with the exception
of “Feels Just Like It Should” have all matched the effort and talent put into
the original versions. After the horror of “Feels Just Like It Should” I was
getting scared that although the original material was still killer that an
A&R novice would relegate this band to second rate status with mixes not
suitable for any dance floor or mix show but “Runaway” has reaffirmed what was
done in the past. The mixes on this single are flawless and do justice to this
incredible release. Jamiroquai continue to be a major
force in popular music outside the
